Abstract

A significant proportion of children and adolescents experience parental divorce, and much research has focused on the impact of divorce on children's adjustment outcomes. This article reviews data on the prevalence of divorce and changes in divorce rates over time, summarizes results of literature on children's postdivorce adjustment outcomes, discusses societal costs of parental divorce, outlines theories of the effects of parental divorce, and describes factors associated with children's responses to parental divorce. The article concludes with a discussion of interventions shown to prevent or reduce children's postdivorce adjustment problems.
