Abstract
Marital sexual life is a very important part of marriage, and it is central to the institution of the family since it can either promote or destabilize a marriage. A married person can have two types of partnered sex, marital sex and extramarital sex; both have a tremendous impact on marriage. Good marital sex can enhance marital happiness and thus promote marriage, while extramarital sex poses a threat to marital stability. In the past half century, though marital sex has been studied extensively by social scientists, the study of extramarital sex remains limited (Christopher & Sprecher, 2000). This entry summarizes the findings of recent research on marital sex and extramarital sex and suggests some strategies to enhance marital sex and to prevent extramarital sex, thus achieving the goal of protecting and promoting marriage. Although this entry focuses on marital sexual life, the analysis and strategies presented are applicable to other types of adult sexual relationships such as cohabitation.
