Abstract

The essay deals with the interpretation of Gramsci’s thought proposed by Mario Dal Pra from the 1950s to the 1980s. The author maintains that Dal Pra was in a constant dialogue with Gramsci despite the lack of explicit references to Prison Notebooks in his published works. This dialogue can be reconstructed through an examination of unpublished material. In his opinion, the theory-praxis relation is the main issue in Dal Pra’s reading of Gramsci’s Prison Notebooks. The essay is divided into three parts: the first part discusses the connections between Gramsci’s of praxis and the philosophical perspective called transcendentalism of praxis in Dal Pra’s published and unpublished writings; the second part analyzes Dal Pra’s assessment of Italian historicist Marxism; and the third part is concerned with the influence of Gramsci’s conception of philosophy on Dal Pra’s reflections on the methodology of historiography.
