Abstract

The minor steroid 1, isolated from the red alga Laurencia obtusa of the Lakshadweep islands, was shown by spectroscpic data and by synthesis, to be 2a-oxa-2-oxo-5α-hydroxy-3,4-di- norcholestane, the first example of the ring A-dinorsteroid isolated from the natural source.
