Abstract

The term crawfish is used here for all lobster-shaped decapods belonging to the family Palinuridae. These are often cited as ‘spiny lobsters’ and sometimes as ‘marine crayfishes’. In this book the vernacular name ‘spiny lobster’ is applied only to species belonging to the genera Palinurus and Panulirus. Similarly, the name ‘shovel-nosed lobster’ includes all species of the family Scyllaridae. The vernacular name ‘slipper lobster’ is restricted to species of the genus Scyllarides and ‘locust lobster’ to species of Scyllarus. The use of common names for these lobsters is further discussed in sections 11.3, 11.4.
