Abstract

A review is given of the basic and clinical effects of marijuana and its constituent compounds on the eye. Brief accounts of the chemistry, metabolism, and other medical effects are provided as well as a brief discussion of glaucoma. Available toxicological data are presented with reference to drug effects on the eye, especially as these relate to comprehension of the mode of action. A perspective is presented on the use of marijuana and its constituents in the treatment of glaucoma, concluding that although it is undisputed that smoking of the raw material causes a fall in intraocular pressure, continued use in this mode leads to substantial pathological changes. Development of drugs based on the cannabinoid nucleus or derived from newly discovered water-soluble compounds appears to be an area worthy of future investigation.
