Abstract

Marijuana use has continued to increase since the legalization of the substance by many states. It is estimated that by the end of 2022, 52 million Americans will have used marijuana. As of August 2022, 38 states either decriminalized cannabis or authorized its use for medical or recreational adult use. Physicians must become aware of not only potential medical benefits but also potential medical dangers of this substance. Potential benefits, including those of synthetic cannabinoids, include reduction of severe nausea and vomiting related to cancer chemotherapy, improvements in certain types of pain, reduction in seizures in certain syndromes of young children, reduction of anorexia in adult patients with AIDS, and reduction of spasticity associated with multiple sclerosis.
