Abstract

2016 Maria Letizia Barreca obtained her MSc cum laude in Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology in 1992, and later received her PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences (1996). In 1999, Dr Barreca was appointed as Assistant Professor at the University of Messina (Italy). Between 1993 and 1999, she spent long research periods at the University of Bari (Italy), and in 2000–2001, was a Visiting Scientist at the University of Houston (TX, USA). In 2007, she was a Visiting Scientist at the Department of Chemistry, University of Perugia, and in 2008, she moved at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the same university. Her research interests are in the field of computational modeling and drug discovery, and her current work focuses on Hepatitis C virus (HCV), neurodegenerative and inflammatory diseases. She is an author of 66 scientific papers and one patent. In 2008, she was awarded the ‘Farmindustria Prize for Pharmaceutical Research’, which is dedicated to scientists younger than 40 years of age.
