Abstract

This paper examines British Labor Force Survey data on self-employed workers, temporary workers, older workers/early retirees, and the long-term unemployed. It shows how a considerable number of temporary workers are also self-employed, many older workers have temporary jobs, and many of the long-term unemployed are also old and effectively early retired. The phenomenon of overlaps emphasizes the need to understand the dynamics of labor market processes. Although the Labor Force Survey provides good cross-sectional information, it tells less about flows between statuses. Thus, the paper concludes by arguing for the introduction of a continuous component to the current survey. Copyright 1989 by Scottish Economic Society.
