Abstract

Marburg Virus Disease (MVD) formerly known as Marburg Virus Haemorrhagic Fever is a zoonotic disease which can lead to a severe form of haemorrhagic fever, causing multi-organ failure and death. Guinea recorded its first ever Marburg Virus case in a 46-year old male farmer in Temessadou M´Boké village who later succumbed to his symptoms. No other cases were reported in the region. The Egyptian fruit bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus) is the known reservoir host of the virus and once transmitted to humans is spread through direct contact with bodily fluids from infected individuals. There are currently no licenced vaccines to prevent MVD and treatment is mainly through aggressive supportive care.
