Abstract

1. It was found that maraging steels N18K9M5T and Kh12N10D2TB have a high elastic limit, low elastic hysteresis, and high heat resistance, which are better than those of spring alloys Br. BNT 1.9, 36NKhTYu, and 36NKhTYuM8. Thus, they appear to be the best materials available for elastic elements. 2. The optimal quenching conditions were established for the two steels, guarangteeing a fine-grained structure and high elastic properties after aging. Steel N18K9M5T should be quenched from 820–840°C and steel Kh12N10D2TB from 870°C, with holding 30 min, cooling in air, and cold treatment 1 h at −70°C. 3. The elastic limit of steels N18K9M5T and Kh12N10D2TB reaches the highest values after aging at 450\dgC for 4 and 6 h respectively. At higher aging temperatures local \ga\ar\gg transformations occur, sharply reducing the elastic limit. 4. Aging of these maraging steels occurs in two stages at 400\2-500\dgC. The abrupt change in the properties in the initial stage is due to simultaneous recovery and segregation of alloing elements on dislocations. The properties change evenly in the second stage, due to the diffusion of atoms to relatively longer distances and the precipitation of coherent particles of excess phases.
