Abstract

This chapter of the book The Novel in the Ancient World presents a list of maps. The first seven maps are pictorial representations of the travels of heroes and heroines of the novels. Travel is such a delineating and integral strategy of the ancient novels (except for Longus and Apuleius). These maps aid the reader in identifying those cities, islands, routes or areas which ancient writers considered fascinating, exotic, enchanting or mysterious enough to warrant visits by their heroes and heroines. The remaining five maps represent the most famous journeys in the ancient world, and it is believed that it worthwhile to compare these with the travels of heroes and heroines in the novels. Keywords: ancient novels; ancient world
