Abstract
A technique of whole-field velocity measurement called Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) was used to map the instantaneous velocity distribution in a section of the casing of a centrifugal fan. The object was to determine the relationship between the blade-passing noise generated by the fan and flow fluctuations in the region of the volute cut-off. This required measurement of the vorticity field as a function of time throughout the blade-passing cycle. The flow velocity was mapped over a rectangular area surrounding the cut-off and vorticity derived subsequently. Phase averaged distributions of velocity and vorticity are presented as functions of rotor angle.
