Abstract

At the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Institut fur Kartographie at the TU Dresden, the changes in academic cartographic education in general and at the TUD in particular are analysed. The previous emphasis there on drawing expertise and analog reproduction methods has been exchanged for digital production and reproduction but the same strong theoretical support is still provided, while thematic cartography, now supported also by remote sensing, still reigns supreme. As before the TUD programme is much research-oriented, and it is expected that this aspect will be retained in the new Bachelor/Master programme to which the current programme is now being converted. Cartography worldwide has suffered from these conversions (the number of dedicated cartographic bachelor/master programmes being strongly reduced) but it is hoped Dresden will turn this trend and provide a beacon for the future of cartographic academic education.
