Abstract

Displacement-based design applied to a broad class of structures, including large bridges and very tall buildings, requires that seismic hazard be mapped in terms of displacement response spectra (DRS) up to long vibration periods. An appropriate hazard representation is presented herein for Italy, in an improved version with respect to a recently published one. A key ingredient for its realization was a new set of attenuation equations for spectral displacement. Probabilistic maps and uniform hazard DRS in the period range 0–20 s are illustrated. A simplified DRS model and spectral modification factors for damping ratios up to 30% are also provided. Finally, alluvium basins effects on DRS (evaluated through parametric analyses and quantified by a simple method) are discussed through data from the April 2009 L’Aquila (Italy) earthquake.
