Abstract

Coastal areas are the strategic areas for West Sumatra, geographically West Sumatra has a coastline lenght of 2,159 km. The number of people living in the district / city coastal of West Sumatra is 2,629,052. Climate change in recent decades led to rising sea levels. This makes the region vulnerable coastal areas to be used as a development activity. Therefore we need a study to determine the level of vulnerability of the coastal region to sea level rise. The method used in this study is by using Geographic Information System (GIS) tools to determine a Coastal Vulnerability Index based on the modification of which has been developed by the United States Geological Surveys. Result of seven coastal areas of West Sumatera that are studied, the percentage of vulnerability index obtained as follows: 23.82% is very low index, 68.59% is low index, 5.79% is medium index, 0.95% is high index and 0.85% is very high index.
