Abstract

The Earth Observing System (EOS) program provides large quantity of spatial and temporal data for global environmental change study. But EOS data cannot be directly visualized and analyzed in map format on web by users. The Open GIS Consortium (OGC) Web Mapping Testbed project develops an interface standard Web Mapping Specification. The specification makes diverse data and computer system on web can interoperate each other. With Web Mapping Specification, Internet and geoprocessing technology, any data can be visualized and analyzed in map format on web. Based on the specification, NASA decided to develop Web GIS Server (WGISS). With WGISS, EOS data can be directly visualized and analyzed on web by Geographic Information System (GIS) community or any EOS data users. The EOS data can interoperate with any other data on web through web mapping interface. The WGISS will promotes EOS data utilization and enhance EOS program. WGISS will timely provide EOS data to EOS data users and GIS community. Global environmental change studies will benefit from WGISS.
