Abstract
This paper prepares a thinking of design as a practice of mapping. Mapping registers the heterogenous texture of place. It charts networks of mutual resonance and linkage which open up to strategic and tactical implications for design. As a questioning practice, mapping is premised on reiterative deferral. The plotting and articulation of implications is what the process of mapping patterns as decision and designation—that is to say, as design.
