Abstract
Summary Information concerning the extent and nature of woodlands was mapped from a successive series of Ordnance Survey maps, land utilisation maps and aerial photographs. The aim was to investigate changes in the extent and nature of woodland areas over the past century (1885–1975). An area in the Brecon Beacons was selected for study. Data from this study were then compared with woodland data from several National Parks from a survey of moorland changes being carried out at the University of Birmingham. From the results it has been possible to identify the differing amounts of afforestation and deforestation occurring over the past century and also the shift in emphasis between three woodland types: broadleaved, coniferous and mixed.
