Abstract

Trifolitoxin consists of 10 amino acids with a thiazoline ring and a UV-absorbing chromophore of unknown structure (Triplett et al., 1988). It is produced by the ineffective strain, R. leguminosarum bv. trifolii T24 and is bacteriostatic toward R. leguminosarum and R. fredii (Triplett and Barta, 1987). Production of trifolitoxin by T24 limits nodulation of clover roots by trifolitoxin-sensitive rhizobia (Schwinghamer and Belkengren, 1968; Triplett and Barta, 1987). The trifolitoxin production and resistance genes (tfx) have been cloned from a genomic library of T24 DNA (Triplett, 1988).
