Abstract

Alleles at several loci are known to influence the level of specific fatty acids in the seed oil of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.]. However, there have been no reports describing the interaction, or association, of these alleles. The fasa allele is responsible for a high level of stearic acid (18:0), and the fan allele for a low level of linolenic acid (18:3) in soybean oil. Alleles at the Idh2 locus are responsible for specific isozyme patterns following starch gel electrophoresis. Crosses were made between pairs of lines that differed for alleles at the Fan and Fas loci, the Fas and Idhl loci, or the Fan and Idh2 loci. Analysis of the F2 or F3 seeds from heterozygous plants indicated that the Fan and Fas loci are linked at a distance of 21.6 ± 1.7 units. In addition, the Fas and Idh2 loci are linked at a distance of 37.0 ± 2.7 units. The Fan and Idh2 loci have been previously shown to be in Linkage Group 17, and are linked at a distance of 26.2 ± 1.2 units. Linkage Group 17 must, therefore, contain the three loci in the order Fas‐Fan‐Idh2.
