This paper show a methodology to analyze the existing vegetation in the main urban area of Diamantina city, aiming to meet the guidelines of the brazilian law called City Statute. The goal was to use the GIS to map the green areas in 2014 and 2016, building a Green Area Index on these dates. As a complement, all the trees on streets and public places in 2016 was georeferenced. The results shows that there was a decrease in the green areas in the entire urban public places and there is a 95.3% deficit in afforestation on public roads. This methodology can be used in another municipalities that need information about vegetation cover.
