ASTRONOMYAstronomical surveys are nothing new, but the late 1990s are a heyday of large surveys. Six of the largest, which may be linked into a single virtual universe, aim to catalog billions of stars and hundreds of millions of galaxies and other objects at wavelengths ranging from radio to ultraviolet ([see main text][1]).
