Abstract

HPV-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma represents a well-characterized entity, with unique molecular and clinical characteristics. Given the increased incidence of the disease that has reached epidemic proportions, an urgent need for optimization of standard of care protocols has emerged. In this review, recently completed and ongoing clinical trials are presented. Clinical research in both the locally advanced as well as the recurrent and metastatic setting is presented. Emphasis is given in presenting the de-intensification strategies currently being evaluated, the translational research based on the recently discovered genetics of head and neck cancers and the emerging role of immunotherapy in the management of this disease.
