Abstract

In these lectures, the use of many-body perturbation theory for atomic calculations will be reviewed. The major emphasis will be on use of the linked-cluster many-body perturbation theory first derived by Brueckner1 and Goldstone.2 General reviews of many-body theory are given in books such as those by Thouless,3 Fetter and Walecka,4 March, Young, and Sampanthar,5 and Lindgren and Morrison.6 In understanding many-body theory, it is useful to begin with Rayleigh-Schrödinger (RS) theory for a one-particle system and to relate it to the many-body case. A similar discussion has been presented previously.7
