Abstract

A broadly based, disaggregated data set, adjusted for geographical shifts in metropolitan areas, is constructed and then used to study manufacturing supply functions. Factor prices, local and state capital outlays and taxes, unions, technological change, transportation costs, and elements of national and local demand are used to estimate the structure of manufacturing supply functions and to investigate the long-run allocation of manufacturing across metropolitan areas.
