Abstract

NCR (Manufacturing) Limited develops and produces self-service financial terminals for worldwide markets. During the 1980s the Company improved its market position and has led the industry for several years. A major contribution to this success has been a sustained drive for manufacturing excellence. This article addresses four key strategies being followed: company-wide quality improvement, supply line management, employee involvement and design for manufacture. Illustrations from a pilot design for manufacture project demonstrate that teamwork, innovation and consideration for manufacturing processes can give significant business benefits.
