Abstract

This chapter introduces the highly complex and specialized field of manufacturing and industrial control systems security. It provides only cursory descriptions on how to practically apply the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Framework to the highly specialized field of industrial control systems and the sometimes life-or-death implications of insecure industrial systems. NIST intends for users to apply the roadmap “for reducing cybersecurity risk for manufacturers that is aligned with manufacturing sector goals and industry best practices.” Unlike the main Framework, the Manufacturing Profile focuses heavily on operational technology used to run machines and equipment and manufacturing processes. The Manufacturing Profile focuses on industrial control systems, including supervisory control and data acquisition systems, distributed control systems, and other control system configurations such as programmable logic controllers often found in the industrial sectors and critical infrastructures.
