Abstract
Long-threaded surfaces and worms can be machined by whirling, such that the cutting head removes material from the workpiece. Whirling can be performed using specialised cutting tools or standard lathes equipped with whirling thread-cutting devices. Worm cutting using a standard lathe is cheaper than employing a specialised device, but certain limitations imposed by the lathe technical parameters create risks of undercutting and interference between the workpiece and whirling attachment. For successful machining it was necessary to adjust the construction of the tool holder and the number of revolutions of the tool and the workpiece. In this paper, we modify a standard whirling device to overcome these issues.
