Abstract

The double-crucible method is described as practised in the L M Ericsson Materials Laboratory for the manufacture of graded-index optical fibres. Multicomponent glasses are used based on the sodium-borosilicate system. Typical fibres obtained have an attenuation 5.5 – 7 dB/km at 850 nm and a pulse broadening of 0.6 – 1 ns/km.
