Abstract

As the application of fibre reinforced polymer composites (FRP) becomes more widespreadthere is a desire to add functionality beyond that of simple mechanical properties in orderto facilitate the development of ‘smart’ materials. Magnetic FRP material has beendeveloped which utilizes hollow glass fibres filled with magnetic material. This paperwill discuss the manufacture, optimization and applications of magnetic FRPmaterials. The magnitude of magnetic performance that can be currently achieved iscontrolled by the availability of suitable magnetic materials in fine powder form, and the volume of magnetic material that can be incorporated within the fibres.
