It is fashionable for full-sized textbooks of oncology to devote considerable space in their opening sections to scholarly discussions of cancer biology and general principles of management. No such lofty emphasis here. This unromantic work opens with a chapter on skin biopsy. Edited by the associate director of the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Treatment Evaluation program and authored by a total of 73 contributors, the text seems to have no distinctive editorial style. Chapters are short, averaging only eight pages in length, and might well be expanded lecture notes for current status reports in every area of cancer medicine.
