This second edition of the<i>Manual of Clinical Microbiology</i>is a very useful compendium of information on essentially all aspects of medical microbiology from viruses to animal parasites. The editors have exerted control over the format of the book such that it provides easy access to any aspect of each subject. This means that the clinician with an infectious disease problem can quickly review a short, concise chapter providing information on its characterization, clinical significance, collection of specimens, immunoserological diagnosis, and antibiotic susceptibility. At the same time, the laboratory technician has access to information dealing with the direct examination of specimens and their culture, isolation, and identification.
