Abstract

The separation of manual and mental labor is often seen as a pivotal feature of the social division of labor. However, social theory must also address the varied ways in which expertise continues to be lodged within the hierarchical division of labor, reflecting the interplay of capitalist strategies, state policies, and forms of occupational organization and mobilization. Many terms are used to characterize such expertise but all remain contentious.
