Abstract

Abstract We demonstrate the manipulation of accelerating beams by gradient potentials. An analytical solution for arbitrarily accelerating beam is derived from the paraxial equation, and the relation between the index gradient and accelerating trajectory is constructed. By tuning the index gradient, the accelerating beam can propagate along an arbitrary trajectory. We can accelerate and decelerate these beams, and even enable them to propagate along a straight line. We also show that the accelerating beams have the same transverse intensity distribution as Airy beams despite different propagation trajectories. It is believed that the advantage of propagation along an arbitrarily appointed trajectory will provide potential applications.
