Abstract

Manifest destiny refers to a racial ideology and imperialist project that the Christian God ordained US settlers and land speculators to occupy the entire North American continent and claim territorial, political, and economic sovereignty over its people and resources. Articulations of this ideology and project were prevalent yet widely contested in the nineteenth century. Uncritical propagation of the “manifest destiny” concept remains pervasive in national and state curriculum standards and history textbooks and circulates in the popular media and the national collective memory.
