Abstract

Describes difficulties associated with clinical diagnosis of the manic-depressive structure, and presents symptoms and behaviors suggestive of the structure. Considers three distinct factors as developmental foundations: parenting from a competitive frame of reference; early emphasis on doing (or not doing) things; and a grandiose approach to thinking, feeling, and doing. The structure is characterized by separate Child adaptations to two separate sets of Parent message, and an Adult which has difficulty solving problems. The separateness is maintained by denial. Location of the structure on a functional-dysfunctional continuum is determined by the winner/loser pattern of the script and upon the age at which script decisions about abandonment issues were made. Social and cultural support for many aspects of the structure may be present.
