Abstract
On-site evaluation of 182 mango trees from different areas in the Philippines was carried out to identify outstanding trees for variety registration. After the initial evaluation, one selection was identified to have promising horticultural characteristics and evaluated for another two years to check the stability and consistency of trait expression. This selection was registered as NSIC 2018 Mn 14 'Mangoming' with the National Seed Industry Council (NSIC). The tree is 28 years old, more than 10 m tall, and has a spreading growth habit of approximately 11 m. The tree bears fruit twice a year with a peak of fruiting from June–July and from December– January if prevailing environmental conditions favor. The tree is very productive, yielding more than 100 kg of fruits every season. It is currently the Guinness Book of World Records (GBWR) holder for the “Heaviest Mango” since 2009, weighing 3.435 kg (7.57 lb). The ellipsoid fruit has an average fruit weight of 1,275.4 g and has a yellowish-green peel with an attractive red blush on the fruit shoulder. The yellow-orange pulp is firm, very juicy, and has low to moderate fibers. The seed measures 159.1 mm long, 51.5 mm wide, and 23.1 mm thick. It has a high edible portion (84.8%) and has a very good eating quality. Fruits are suitable for fresh consumption as well as for processing.
