Abstract

PHOTOSYNTHESIS of unicellular green algae (Chlorella 1, Ankistrodesmus 2, Scenedesmus 3) requires the presence of small quantities of the micronutrient manganese (Mn2+). Manganese-deficient cells show a much-reduced photosynthesis, which can be rapidly brought to normal by addition of manganese (short-term recovery effect). This effect of manganese has been shown to occur both in strong and in weak light2,3.
