Abstract

In this work, thermoelectric power measurements (TEP) at 20 C have mainly been used to study the migration of manganese into cementite and to clarify the effect of manganese on the solubility of carbon. This technique is very sensitive to the amount of elements in solid solution in iron. In order to correlate TEP evolutions of the samples to the concentration variation of manganese in solid solution, the authors have first studied the influence of manganese in solid solution on the TEP of four low-carbon steels containing varied amounts of manganese. Internal friction measurements and TEM-microanalysis have been complementary in interpreting TEP evolutions.
