Abstract
Ameloblastoma is a benign, locally invasive odontogenic epithelial tumor, with aggressive behavior and a high rate of recurrence. Resection of these tumors invariably results in important bone defects that depend on surgical correction and planning for rehabilitation of the patient. The aim of this study is to present a clinical case of mandible ameloblastoma and discuss the aspects of the treatment. A 21-year-old female patient was referred for evaluation, presenting an extensive lesion in the left posterior region of the mandible. After clinical, imaging, and histopathologic examinations, the diagnosis of ameloblastoma was established. The tumor was treated by segmental resection, with wide margins and mandibular reconstruction using a microvascular fibula flap. No sign of recurrence was observed after 18 months of follow-up, and the mandibular function and facial aesthetics are satisfactory. We conclude that mandibular reconstructions are essential in the treatment of ameloblastomas.
