Abstract

Objective To evaluate the effectiveness of mandibular incisor extraction in patients with combined treatment of implant prosthetics and orthodontics. Methods Twenty-one cases with single mandibular incisor extraction from 148 combined treatment cases were analyzed. The sample consisted of 9 males and 12 females with an average age of 32.1 years. All the patients presented with missing maxillary incisor and Bolton discrepancy in the anterior region.Seventeen patients received orthodontic treatment in both arches and 14 patients were treated only in the mandibular arch.Status of anterior occlusal relationship and tooth alignment in the mandibular arch after treatment were evaluated. Results The extraction space was closed in all patients.Good occlusal relationship and soft tissue profile were achieved.Black triangles in extraction sites were not more obvious than that in the adjacent sites. An average of 2 mm overjet after treatment was generally satisfactory. Conclusions One single mandibular incisor extraction might be a good orthodontic alternative in selected combined treatment patients with Class Ⅰ or mild Class Ⅲ molar relationship,Bolton discrepancy, and moderate crowding or protusion in mandibular anterior teeth. Key words: orthodontic extraction treatment; mandibular incisor extraction
