Abstract
Mandibular buccal bifurcation cyst is an uncommon type of inflammatory cyst arising on the buccal aspect of the roots of a partially or recently erupted first or second mandibular molar, as a result of inflammation in the pericoronal tissues. We present a case of an 8-year-old boy with an asymptomatic buccal swelling of the right mandible close to the partially erupted permanent first molar. Tomographic sections showed a hypodense lesion involving the roots of the first mandibular molar with a buccal expansion of the cortical bone. Enucleation of the lesion was performed without tooth extraction and the correction of bone defect was performed. Histopathological examination showed a cyst lined by a nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium with mixed exocytosis and a fibrous wall with a mixed inflammatory infiltrate. The diagnosis of mandibular buccal bifurcation cyst was performed through the association of clinical, tomographic, and histopathologic characteristics.
