Abstract

AbstractThis paper places the development of tourism and recreation in rural areas in Europe within policy and management contexts. It attempts to: briefly examine the different levels of policy influencing rural recreation and tourism development, emphasizing the connectedness between local and global processes; emphasize the need to view recreation and tourism development in rural areas within the wider context of the management of rural resources (land); and evaluate challenges posed for such management and key issues for the development of recreation and tourism in rural areas arising from these challenges. It is suggested that the value judgements attached to many countryside access policy decisions become increasingly recognized as being based on the premise that the countryside will be unable to support the capacity required of the projected growth of tourism and recreation.
