Abstract

Venous leg ulceration (VLU) is a preventable condition that affects a large proportion of the population; however, less than 20% of people with the condition receive appropriate treatment. Mismanagement is costly and time consuming, and VLUs have a negative impact on patients, who may suffer physical symptoms, psychological distress and social difficulties. Evidence-based treatment strategies are effective in healing within 12–18 weeks for simple VLUs. Health professionals should implement preventative strategies to avoid the progression of chronic venous disease (CVD), therefore reducing the incidence of ulceration and the associated impact and costs.
