Human Resource ManagementVolume 22, Issue 1-2 p. 173-181 Article Managing the middle Mary Anne Devanna, Mary Anne Devanna Mary Anne Devanna is research coordinator of the Center for Research in Career Development and associate director of the Strategy Research Center at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business. Before returning to academia, Ms. Devanna was advertising director for Longines. She received her Ph.D. in the Management of Organizations Department at Columbia University's Graduate School of Business and holds a B.A. from St. John's University and an M. B.A. from Columbia university. In addition to doing research on human resources management she is conducting a study focusing on M.B.A. career patterns with an emphasis on the differences between white males and minorities in the same cohort. Ms. Devanna consults in the private and public sectors and serves as editor-in-chief of the Columbia Journal of World Business.Search for more papers by this authorE. Kirby Warren, E. Kirby Warren E. Kirby Warren is the Samuel Bronfman Professor of Democratic Business Enterprise at the Graduate School of Business of Columbia University. He is also Area Coordinator, Management of Organizations Division and the Director of the Center for Research and Career Development. Dr. Warren holds a Ph.D. from the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University, an M.S. from the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University and an A.B. from Columbia College. He has worked as a consultant and seminar leader with numerous major corparations and trade associations in the United States, Great Britain and Europe. Dr. Warren's publications include Long Range Planning: The Executive Viewpoint published in 1966 and The Process of Management (5th ed., 1981).
