Abstract

Most patients with peptic ulcer are greatly reassured by their doctor's implicit or explicit interest in their emotional state. The patient who sees his life as a series of challenges to overcome can be helped to put his peptic ulcer in the same frame of reference. Reassurance is also a vital element in managing patients with ulcerative colitis, whose dependence on their physician is a characteristic of their disease.
