Abstract

Some techniques for improving the dietary value of Artemia nauplii were compared. The growth rate of turbot was increased when the nauplii were prefed for 24 h with baker's yeast and fish oil emulsion, before their enrichment for 2 h with fish autolysate and fish oil. However, the dietary value of the nauplii from San Francisco was far behind that of the Brazilian strain, even after prefeeding. The continuous distribution of prefed nauplii should not be recommended at least until day 20, as the growth rate of turbot is not further improved, in comparison with that obtained with nauplii prefed for 24 h, then enriched for 2 h. Moreover, the survival rate of turbot was significantly decreased by this distribution technique. It was concluded that the nauplii should be prefed for 24 h for feeding turbot larvae as soon as day 10 after hatching.
