Abstract

The increasing number and heterogeneity of networked personal computers (PCs) along with the integration of PC networks into classical data processing infrastructures consisting of UNIX, NT, and mainframe servers is one of the most important computing trends in recent years. The variety of operating systems and system configurations turns management in this environment into a complex task. Obviously, this scenario cannot be efficiently managed with proprietary or dedicated tools alone. Management applications must become part of an integrated network, system and application management solution. This need is further exacerbated by the increasing appearance of mobile systems. Relevant management tasks such as inventory management, software distribution, remote control, and license management are presented according to their need in different PC networking environments. An overview of the DMI standard of the DMTF as well as the Web-based enterprise management (WBEM) and Java management API (JMAPI) activities is followed by a discussion of organizational and operational issues for PC management projects. A brief outlook concludes the presentation of this new, complex and very dynamic area in management.
