Abstract

The Minister emphasized the importance of the Conference in view of the need to maintain and protect marine sources of food essential for an increasing world population. Evidences of overfishing and injury to stocks in many major fisheries point to the urgent need for international cooperation in management practices. Limits to growth of fisheries must be established for economic reasons as well as for conservation and efficient use of living resources of the seas. Scientists will have to provide the basic biological information on each species, governments must make and apply internal and international control measures, and economists indicate the optimum sustainable economic yield. This is the challenge that faces the Conference.
